First Day with The Chicano Federation Leadership Training Institute Fellows Program

Earlier this month, Gaby Millán, Executive Director of Teens Rise Foundation, attended her first convening as part of the Chicano Federation Leadership Training Institute (LTI) Fellows Program. This inaugural session set the tone for what promises to be a transformative experience, focused on community building, cultural identity, leadership development, and time in community with thoughtful leaders.

The day began with a warm welcome from Chicano Federation CEO Liz Ramirez and a group photo, followed by an opening blessing danza ceremony from Tlayolohtli, grounding the group in a shared sense of purpose and a form of ancestor worship. Dr. Ted Martinez, Executive Director of the LTI Fellows Program, shared the rich history of the program, welcoming the new cohort of leaders who represent the future of San Diego’s Chicano and Latine communities.

One of the most powerful moments was led by Liz Ramirez, who facilitated a "Building Community" exercise. Each participant brought an item from home that represented their culture or heritage. Gaby and her peers shared personal stories tied to their families' history, traditions, and childhood memories. The items provided a meaningful window into each other's lives, helping the group connect on a deeper level.

The session closed with a presentation on “Chicano/Latino History and Identity,” led by Josie Talamantez, founder of the Chicano Park Museum, and Dr. Alberto Pulido, Professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of San Diego. They shared the powerful story of Chicano Park, a landmark of cultural resistance. Built in response to displacement in Barrio Logan during the construction of the I-5 freeway in the 1960s, the park became a symbol of Chicano activism. Today, it is a vibrant community space adorned with murals celebrating Chicano culture, with the Chicano Park Museum continuing the legacy.

This first convening marked the beginning of Gaby’s journey in the LTI Fellows Program, as she and her cohort explore their own leadership paths while learning from the rich history and culture that define their communities.
